Por pertencer a uma cadeia de base florestal, a sustentabilidade das operações da CMPC Celulose Riograndense depende diretamente do uso responsável dos recursos da natureza. É por isso que a empresa maneja seus plantios de forma a minimizar e mitigar os impactos e promover o equilíbrio ambiental, levando em consideração os aspectos legais, técnicos, científicos, econômicos e sociais. Além de cumprir a legislação ambiental, a CMPC Celulose Riograndense mantém um Plano de Manejo Florestal com diretrizes específicas para cada uma de suas propriedades, desde o planejamento do plantio e da colheita, até a entrega da madeira na fábrica.

Type of native vegetation existing in the area of ​​the company are mapped and fragments in the initial regeneration stage are characterized in the field in order to to define recovery measures. As the planting is distributed in different biomas, characterization studies for dynamic phytosociological monitoring are carried out in two large blocks - one related to forest vegetation with size and others related to the country vegetation.

The company's fauna surveys are focused on birds, considering the different types of ecosystems that exist. The avifauna is the bioindicator group used by the company to monitor the impacts of forest management activities on the biodiversity of its areas of activity. Gradually, other groups such as mammals, reptiles and amphibians are also studied to improve conservation actions.

Water quality and quantity are monitored in a network of micro-basins that characterize the different regions where the company operates within a network of specific equipment (piezometers), installed to monitor the depth of the water table and subsurface water quality.

The behavior of the birds acts as a thermometer of biodiversity in the plantations of Celulose Riograndense, since they are very sensitive and are the first to leave any sign of imbalance. Thanks to this process the company was able to identify more than 200 species of birds in their areas.
